Quadrennial International Sporting Event - It’s-a Me, QISE! Day 3 / by Mark

With the Superb Owl out of the way, NBC can finally concentrate on QISE--until the NBA All-Star Game :(  Off to last night’s delayed prime time--

First off, NBC actually stuck to their posted schedule, almost as if they had control over sportsball timing--hmm.

We jump right into women's downhill--let's see the Vonn crash again!  I'm still impressed with the drone view.

Torico (off screen in CA) sends us over to to the rest of the Team Skating event.  Despite the dramatic poses, most of the artistry has been drilled out of the performances in favor of athletic jumps.  NBC edited it way down for prime time to just the top two in each competition.  Weir goes catty--”the judges were VERY generous in his grades of execution…”  Regardless, US takes the gold.  Quad God’s voice does NOT match his look.

We get Breezy’s medal ceremony--we just learned she’s multi-talented, knitting QISE logo sweaters.  We also get a Honda insta-commercial celebrating the Team Skating win.  And it’s our first Medal Count, with Italy #1, US #6.

Late Night with Fareed, and Men’s Parallel Giant Slalom (again?  I’m confused).  It’s co-branded with Starbucks.  On the plus side, Breezy is interviewed via Facetime--now with her repaired medal.  Then more Big Air qualifiers--how long does this take?

Then it’s what would normally be our first QISE-centric Today Show, with Hoda subbing as co-host for Savannah.  She and Craig are back at 30 Rock, with Stephanie Gosk, Peter Alexander, and Anne Thompson handing off to taped packages in Milan.  I have to wonder if there is a Milan Today-specific set, currently dark.  Craig and Hoda do interview the US skating team and Breezy (via FaceTime).  Erin Jackson (the flag bearer and speedskater) gets a package of old clips, and Shaun White checks in.

Off to daytime with Fareed, doing back-to-back duty, and over to Women’s 1000m Speedskating--considered a “sprint”.  More drone views--NBC deserves a technical Emmy for this.  Erin Jackson is the US competitor the network is pushing--there’s a wacky trivia game featuring her.  The Netherlands wins it though.

Next is Men’s Team Combined Alpine Skiing, with the Slalom wrapping it up.  The Swiss take it as expected.  Then more Big Air, this time for the Ladies yada yada yada.

Over to Ice Dancing--Rhythm Dance.  Weir: “Oh, Enrique”.  Did the dancer make a mistake?  Or was Johnny just swooning?  Turns out he was referring to the music.  Speaking of music, some of it is AI-based.  Yuck!  It’s also noted that the top 20 qualify for the Free Skate, and there are 23 teams.  So, does this even matter?  The US’s Chock and Bates get second place going into the Free Skate.  Meanwhile, Italy is still #1 in the Medal Count.

Tirico officially steps in for prime time--for us, that’s tomorrow.
