Quadrennial International Sporting Event - It’s-a Me, QISE! Day 4 / by Mark

Let’s jump into last night’s Prime Time, with the finale of the curling match--the two Coreys move ahead!  Torico is finally in Milan, reporting from the Duomo-adjacent set.  Over to Men's Team Combined Alpine Skiing (quite a mouthful).  The downhill portion shows off the graphics and drone work.  Play-by-play announcer Dan Hicks is at the top of his game.

At one point, there was an insert telling us what events were coming up, and it looks like NBC is no longer providing a countdown timer for each one. Good idea--that really made it obvious that the whole thing was on tape.

Ugh, Snoop's back. He's being taught how to ski.

Vonn update--she has a compound tibia fracture that will require multiple surgeries to resolve.   Then a quick trip around the games, including the story about the Ukrainian slider who placed images of victims of the war against Russia on his helmet. NBC failed to mention that the QISEOC told him he couldn't do that.  QISEOC--always on the right side of history.

Moving on to a rerun of the team skating short program.  They did add a package about the evening’s theme--music of the '90s.  Many of the competitors weren’t alive then.  Tucci checks in--he attends a women’s hockey game, and later has a meal with the US team.  Then it’s a rerun of the Men’s Team Combined Slalom and Women’s 1000m Speed Skating, before the “Event of the Night” (with limited commercial interruptions)--an “encore” of Team Skating with Chock and Bates.

Next is Women’s SlopeStyle finals.  China’s Eileen Gu got a package describing how she handles being a full-time college student as well as a QISE athlete AND a model.  Maybe she’s doing too much--she fell in her run but still got silver.  Medal Count - Italy remains in front.

Late Night kicks off with a rerun of the Women’s Big Air final.  This event seems to have taken up 50% of all QISE coverage.  Fareed gives a salute to the QISE volunteers before sending us off to Women’s Single Luge.  I’m not sure if the exposed plywood on the course is a design decision or the result of last second construction.  Then it’s curling highlights, and speedskater Brittany Bowe’s mom and sister drop by for an interview and goofy games.

On the Today Show, Alexander gives an overall update, and Gosk highlights figure skating, with Tara and Johnny providing their two cents.  Tom Llamas comes over from Nightly News to interview Max Naumov, a US skater who’s parents--Russian champions in team skating--died in a tragic plane crash a year ago.  I’m guessing you’ll see this story played multiple times.

Daytime coverage--Lowe from the Duomo brings us up to speed.  The US’s Ben Ogden shocks QISE with a silver in cross-country skiing, the first medal for the US in that sport in 50 years.   More SlopeStyle, the Men’s Final, then Curling Mixed Doubles, with the US getting silver.  It’s just a prelude for the Quad God and the Short Program.  But now I’m caught up on the DVR, so it’s over to Peacock, which gives us more competitors--but you have to watch the ads.

For one competitor who was clearly hesitating on a spin, Tara and Johnny started chanting “DO IT!  DO IT!!”  A break during Zamboni maintenance allows Tirico to takes us around the games.  But we finally make it to the big guns in Men’s Skating.  NBC has put Malinin on a pedestal so high he should have a nose bleed.  Fortunately, he came out on top, with the Free Skate left to go.

Tirico wraps it up with women’s hockey highlights that were going on at the same time--the US shuts out Canada.  Medal count--Italy drops out of the #1 spot, US up to #4.

That’s it for now.
