#parkhopping - Day 1 / by Mark

Reporting from Seven Oaks, SC

My sister-in-law Kathy and her daughter Trish drove down from WI yesterday, with Trish taking an Uber to the airport in the wee hours.  So we left early, around 8a.  We made good time today--it helps with three drivers.

First stop--Point Pleasant WV and the Mothman Museum.  A cryptid reported alongside a horrific bridge collapse in the 60's.  There's also an abandoned explosives facility and a Men in Black angle.  The museum is well laid out and cheap at 5 bucks a head.  I got a t-shirt and Mindy got a pressed penny.

Next, the campus at West Virginia State University at Institute, and a statue of Katherine Jenkins.  An early NASA "computer" (back when that meant someone who did manual computations) critical to the success of several space missions.  You can see her story in the film “Hidden Figures".

Lunch at Cook Out, a southern chain that considers a corn dog as a possible side dish.  They’re also known for their many shake flavors.  We shared a “tray” in a freezing cold dining room.

On thru Virginia, which had some very pretty “flocked” trees, and onto North Carolina.

Mindy and I had previously visited Mt. Airy--the inspiration for Mayberry of Andy Griffith Show fame--but it was new for Kathy. Nip it in the bud!

We were now getting into the evening, so we stopped at Zaxby’s, another southern chain.  Think Raising Canes with a more varied menu, including salads (hint hint Canes).

Made it to the hotel--we’re bushed!

Tomorrow--Orlando and the AirBnB.
