Reporting from Casa de Schmidbauer
1942 miles later
We began our final run home from a chain hotel--it was fine.
We had to get in another giant thing on the trip--here’s a soup can in front of a Campbell’s plant. We couldn’t get too close.
In the same town, we drove by Mindy’s old apartment, back when she worked for a waste treatment company. It was pretty run down.
Off to Marion, and President Harding’s memorial. But we were really there for his next door neighbor, a local businessman who had his remains buried in a pyramid just a few years ago.
Marion also displays a giant shovel bucket, which was advertised as a photo op to sit inside. Unfortunately, a brick wall separates you from it unless you’re spry—which we are not.
Lunchtime at G&R. and their famous baloney sammich. It was quite good--a thick slice with cheese, onions, and pickles. Mindy had a grilled ham and cheese. The place is rustic, and I suspect we were the only non-locals there.
Our final stop was in Delaware, just north of the Columbus area. President Hayes was born there, but they just got around to putting in a statue.
So—what did we learn?
State and National Parks fight over territory
The world’s tallest man died as the result of a parade
There are (at least) TWO world’s largest pie pans
Door County organizes its graffiti
President Ford has a mini-me
Michigan is fine with unpaved roads
Overall, we really enjoyed the trip. It was a little rainy, but the views were fine, the attractions weird, and the time together wonderful. Now to figure out which of the Great Lakes to attack next…
